چکیده

Invertebrates were collected and identified from the stomach contents of eight mosquitofish (Gambusia affinis) populations in the northern Waikato region of New Zealand at 3-month intervals from December 1994 to September 1995. To investigate temporal and spatial patterns in dietary composition a novel analysis programme was created that used Gower's similarity coefficient. The analysis found differences in diet among months, lakes, and three size groups of mosquitofish (<15, 15-25, and >25 mm). Smaller mosquitofish fed mostly on zooplankton whereas larger G. affinis ate greater quantities of terrestrial fauna and large invertebrates. These differences are probably correlated with gape size and visual acuity, although ecological factors may also be important.

Cytonuclear genetics of experimental fish hybrid zones inside Biosphere 2.

Two species of mosquitofish (family Poeciliidae) known to hybridize in nature were introduced into freshwater habitats inside Biosphere 2, and their population genetics were monitored after 2 years. Within four to six generations, nuclear and cytoplasmic markers characteristic of Gambusia holbrooki had risen greatly in frequency, although some Gambusia affinis alleles and haplotypes were retain...

Deleterious effects by mosquitofish (Gambusia affinis) on the endangered fire salamander (Salamandra infraimmaculata)

Invasive fishes, via competition and predation, may be an important factor in endangering populations of amphibians and other aquatic fauna. The mosquitofish, Gambusia affinis, commonly stocked into amphibian breeding sites for mosquito control worldwide, has recently been found in some breeding sites of the endangered fire salamander Salamandra infraimmaculata in northern Israel. A comparison ...

Population Cage Experiments with a Vertebrate: the Temporal Demography and Cytonuclear Genetics of Hybridization in Gambusia Fishes.

The dynamics of mitochondrial and multilocus nuclear genotypic frequencies were monitored for 2 yr in experimental populations established with equal numbers of two poeciliid fishes (Gambusia affinis and Gambusia holbrooki) that hybridize naturally in the southeastern United States. In replicated "small-pool" populations (experiment I), 1018 sampled individuals at six time periods revealed an i...

Predator-driven phenotypic diversification in Gambusia affinis.

Predation is heterogeneously distributed across space and time, and is presumed to represent a major source of evolutionary diversification. In fishes, fast-starts--sudden, high-energy swimming bursts--are often important in avoiding capture during a predator strike. Thus, in the presence of predators, we might expect evolution of morphological features that facilitate increased fast-start spee...

An evaluation of Gambusia affinis and Bacillus thuringiensis var. israelensis as mosquito control agents in California wild rice fields.

The mosquito control potential of the mosquitofish and Bacillus thuringiensis var. israelensis (Bti) were evaluated in experimental wild rice fields in Lake County, California. Fields were assigned one of six treatment: control, 1.1 kg/ha G. affinis, 3.4 kg/ha G. affinis, Bti only (6 kg/ha Vectobac granules), 1.1 kg/ha G. affinis plus Bti and 3.4 kg/ha G. affinis plus Bti. Gambusia affinis, at ...
